18.03.04 - 16:48 number three for today... a couple nights ago, will and i both fell asleep in the midst of our conversation on my front porch. when i woke up, he was so dead asleep that he was barely breathing, so, feeling a bit woozy with fatigue myself, i got myself ready for bed. i was just stumbling back from the latrine, makkaresh in tow, when my headlamp caught a gleam in the sand. it was small, but fiercely bright, like a star. it was almost blue, almost white, without actually being either. there are a lot of shiny things in the sand - glass, battery casings, hypodermic needles - but for some reason, this one fascinated me. i moved slowly toward it. no, it wasn't a glass shard, it was a bead, i decided. i reached our to take it... and only at the last moment say the brown, dusty body beneath it. i had been looking into the eye of a spider. large, fearsome, and no doubt lying in wait for things more delicious than me. it was a beautiful, raw moment. it must be a metaphor for something, but what? i would have asked will, but he was still so deeply asleep that all my queries were answered with franglais moans.
