My newest project involves medical waste. The Kankossa hospital is, in a word, disgusting. Paper trash litters the hallways. Syringes fill the unused sinks. Walls and ceilings are spattered with blood (yes, blood.) Used bandages, syringes, and broken medicine bottles are tossed in piles outside, in the sand. They await only a tiny unclad foot, or a large flip-flopped foot, to cause inury, tetanus, and infection. We get the picture? The hospital workers need more information on how to deal with medical waste. The hospital has an above-ground incinerator, but it is too small, and all trash tumbles out of it, burned and unburned. So I am looking into in-ground incinerator plans. The other problem involves "sharps boxes", or syringe receptacles. There are simply not enough of them. I'm considering other possbilities, including using plastic water bottles. Of course, there needs to be a lot of education to go along with all of this. It's a work-in-progress. We'll see how it goes!
