19.10.04 - 14:40 It is the fourth day of Ramadan. The fourth day of 5am breakfasts (hot chocolate, oatmeal with dates and bananas), the fourth day of being dehydrated, because even though I'm not really fasting - I'm drinking water - I don't bring my water bottle around with me, so as not to drink in public. It's the fourth day of watching Mauritanians guzzle zriig (drink made with milk) and eat bread all day, even though they put me down when they discover I drink water. And, you know, it's the fourth day of me wondering why people in a struggling, starving country fast, don't work as much because of it, and decrease productivity for one-twelfth of the year. I like the idea of Ramadan. Really. But Tunisia did not observe Ramadan in 1960 because of the productivity level and... well, it makes sense to me. I hate to say it, but when only half the population is truly fasting, there are no excuses for not doing your job. ESPECIALLY IF YOU WORK IN HEALTH. In any case, by not eating, I do feel more spiritual, so help me. And I learn firsthand what the effects of fasting/starvation/dehydration are on the body firsthand, which has been helpful.
